Looking down the staircase locks at Bingley in West Yorkshire, the largest of eight massive lock staircases which together raise the Yorkshire side of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal 155 feet to the Pennine summit near Littleborough. Bingley Five Rise lifts the canal 60 feet in a distance of just 320 feet. The staircases were designed by canal engineer John Longbotham of Halifax and built by local stonemasons. The 3 two rise staircases, 4 three rise staircases and Bingley Five Rise were an engineering triumph of their day, opened in 1774 in ceremonies watched by an estimated 30,000 people.
