Radcot Bridge is said to be the most beautiful bridge on the River Thames, built with three arches from local honey coloured Taynton stone in 1200. It may also be the oldest bridge on the Thames though that claim is disputed by proponents of Newbridge, built 50 years later. However Newbridge does cross the main stream of the Thames, Radcot Bridge is now on a backwater, having been bypassed by a ‘new cut’ opened in 1787 to improve navigation. Radcot Bridge also had to be substantially rebuilt after damage in battles in the 14th and 15th centuries, its previously pointed centre arch being levelled.
